Another optional feature of the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway is the Protection Pack, which offers protection against viruses, spam and phishing. |
If the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway is directly connected to the Internet, without any upstream protection components, via MX record, we urgently recommend using this component. Otherwise, in the event of spam attacks, there is a risk of an overload of the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway and of downstream systems, if applicable.
Even with upstream protection components, it is not possible to scan encrypted emails for viruses. After emails have been decrypted at the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway, they can also be scanned for viruses there. Furthermore, activating the virus protection ensures the two-step nature of the virus protection.
The protection is realised by means of block-, welcome- and grey-listing, Real-Time Blackhole List (RBL) as well as the integrated components SpamAssassin and ClamAV. Additionally, the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway offers a proprietary anti-spoofing function.
The Protection Pack generally works as inline rejection. This means that the sender will be notified in all cases if their email is rejected.
This behaviour makes much more sense in terms of (legal) security, workflow and especially user-friendliness than the classic and at best historically useful "quarantine function".
The Protection Pack is currently undergoing a complete overhaul, both in terms of the basic components used and a significantly expanded functionality. For marketing reasons, a quarantine function may then also be available – despite controversial recommendation.
The revised version of the Protection Pack is expected to be released in 2022.
