Another optional feature of the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway is the Large File Transfer, LFT for short. |
In addition to the usually small data volumes in emails, there is often also a need to transfer relatively large data volumes. This includes photographs, videos and data relating to marketing campaigns, CAD data from the development or database dumps of the IT department. The transmission of these data volumes via email mostly fails due to the limit values prescribed by the recipient but often also by the sender's own email system.
The sender is thus forced to use an alternative transmission system which seems suitable to them. This usually entails the use of various Internet services, or the creation of a "shadow IT system". This means that highly sensible data is often transported via uncontrolled and/or uncontrollable paths (e.g. Dropbox).
One last alternative would also be time-consuming and expensive processes, such as the traditional mail service.
SEPPmail offers LFT, a procedure in which the proven GINA technology (see GINA Webmail) sends an invitation to collect the large files. Here, it can be decided centrally or optionally by the individual senders whether the recipient’s access is to be password-protected. In any case, the transmission path is secure.
On the appliance itself, only three parameters are required, even if additional settings are possible:
•Standard procedure for sending LFT messages, with or without a password.
•Dwell time (in days) of LFT messages in order to prevent an uncontrolled growth of the provided memory. Upon expiration of the set period, an LFT message is deleted automatically. The sender will be informed 24 hours before the expiration of this period if the or one of the recipients has failed to collect the data until then.
•Threshold value (in KB) from which the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway shall send outgoing emails as LFT messages.
Optional
•Maximum size (in KB) which an LFT message may reach. If no size is defined, an LFT message may be as large as one quarter of the available LFT memory.
•Standard procedure for LFT replies, with or without a password. If large files have been sent to an external recipient by means of the LFT secure procedure, this recipient may send large files to internal recipients via their GINA account. These replies may also be sent internally via LFT, in order to bypass size restrictions of the downstream email server, if applicable.
•Threshold value (in KB) from which the SEPPmail Secure E-Mail Gateway shall also send LFT replies internally using this technology.
•Parameters for connecting a separate LFT archive server via SCP and/or SFTP.
1 If the LFT procedure is applied internally, the internal recipient is assigned LFT licence.
Sending large files
There are five options available for sending large data volumes via LFT:
3. SEPPmail Microsoft Outlook Add-In
4.API (application programming interface for the transfer of files)
5.Delivery/Sending By External Senders To Internal Recipients
